Performing and writing in various groups on Long Island as well as being a musician for hire/studio work (including backing Robbie Rosen of American Idol) helped serve as stepping stones for my latest and most accomplished project: FACE THE KING. I studied with the Great Master Lennie Tristano and have about 15 years of intensive study like eight hours a day! There is no substitute for experience! This has afforded me the opportunity to teach privately in all style and genres effectively since high school. I teach out of instructional books, notably books by Hal Leonard, Mel Bay, and Alfred. Sometimes, I use sheet music print outs, and draft up my own exercises. I go back in forth in a non-conventional manner, adapting accordingly to the student's needs. I like to incorporate exercises and warm ups to improve and enchance technique. I also teach songs that the student would like to learn. I'm very patient and rarely rigid in my approach, although I do stick to a general routine that allows a focused approach to learning. I am an intuitive teacher: I have learned how to observe my students, their moods, their energy levels, and adjust my lesson plan on the fly. For instance, one student has ADHD, which I manage by injecting exciting new rhythms for him to mimic when I see his attention wander. I then harness that renewed focus towards the original goal of the lesson, whether it’s learning a new time signature or a complex cross-rhythm. Read More

I have a very patient and laid back personality which I think benefits most students. The last thing a student wants to feel is pressure from their teacher to perform up to the teacher's standards. Everyone has a different idea of success and this also translates in the world of music. Some want to become world-class virtuosos, while others want to simply enjoy playing music for their personal fulfillment. Neither path is right or wrong and I will work with all of my students to maximize their particular goals. Read More

For music sight-reading on the guitar, for students of all styles (except Classical-exclusive), with my youngest students up through high school I use Mel Bay's "Modern Guitar Method Grade 1" & optionally Grade 2 (depending on the direction and progress of the student) before moving onto Hal Leonard's Musicians Institute "Music Reading For Guitar" book. For adult students not studying Classical or Jazz, I make sight-reading of music optional, but I still make music theory mandatory for the student in order to provide a broad understanding of the music they learn, as well as provide knowledge on how to improvise their own guitar solos.
