Individuality is of the utmost importance to me as a teacher. No two students learn the same or are instructed the same by me as a teacher. All factors are taken into consideration when I teach. As a teacher I challenge each students encouraging them to take on assignments that they can reach their goals and find some self-expression and self-discovery in doing so. I practice a laid back style of teaching, I am very understanding and kind, my students respond well to my personality and my psychology background is a plus in dealing with students. Read More

With my teaching style, I try to maintain open lines of communication as much as possible. This means learning about students, them learning about me, and feeling comfortable in communicating their roadblocks in music. Music is an expressive art form, and I believe that being able to effectively communicate with students will lead to a better instruction - students feel more comfortable performing and explaining issues, and teachers can cater to the learning styles of those students, which expedites the learning process and creativity. I believe in being being honest and encouraging, allowing students the chance to struggle and fail in a safe environment, while stressing and correcting proper techniques. I encourage practicing a little almost every day of the week, and finding what fires you up about the instrument. I also make sure to take an interest in student's lives beyond music- people are busy, and I understand those pressures! Besides that, music can relate to many areas and disciplines in life, and one's own previous experiences offer many methods for greater understanding. Read More

When the student performs the pieces that they have practiced I will what to see if they have all the correct fingerings and hit all the correct notes on the correct frets and strings. I am very good at music theory and history, and I will talk about this a little if it is relevant to how to perform the piece. While I believe that most students will want to learn pieces have heard someone else play, I can answer any questions they have about music theory or the historical context of the piece. Read More

My approach seeks to breathe air under the wings of the students' interest and attention by making them a constant starting point, while also laying the groundwork of introspection for students to develop and apply their own practices of learning, exploration, and innovation going forward. My teaching methods focus on considering embodied experiences of music, as well as a range of philosophical considerations. Students will be encouraged to think about how feelings, subjectivities, sounds, and spaces interact in complex ways, along with a series of other metaphysical questions that I believe are essential to a holistic praxis of understanding and learning music. Firstly, I teach the student the anatomy of the guitar and how to tune it, along with how to hold a pick. After that, I start teaching students how to identify notes on the fretboard. When they have a good grasp on that, I start to teach the basic modes, such as the major, minor, pentatonic, blues, lydian, mixolydian, and dorian modes, and while they are learning these, I give them exercises that use these modes to increase the student's mechanical skill, such as going up and down the scales in patterns of three/four/etc. Read More
