Every lesson begins with play! Learning is easiest when fun. My lesson plans typically follow helping the student develop a practice routine. This is customized to their needs. Then I help evaluate their progress -- perhaps they are learning a new song. Listening to what the student plays is important! We play together as if their are melodies. As I mentioned, I believe creativity should be encouraged. I am okay with any pace the student goes at, however I will still hold them to a high standard in terms of effort put in. I try and make each lesson fun and enjoyable, as well as a creative experience that still focuses on theory and fundamentals. I have found, especially for beginner and younger students (I.E. friends and family members I have taught), it is best to first see where they are in ability to play the instrument. From there, we work on correcting bad habits that develop from being self taught, things such as poor picking technique, finger placement, hand placement, minimal understanding of rhythm and basic theory concepts. I cater my lessons according to the students experience level. For beginners, I teach them a few chords, exercises and get them playing their favorite songs fairly quickly. This helps build some positive steps and motivates the student to keep playing. For more experienced students, I use the Berkley Guitar Method, teaching them chords, scales and simple songs which puts the theory into practice. I try to incorporate some form of a goal to achieve, whether its a recital, audition, or just an informal get together with another student. In order to reach these goals its very important to instill proper practice techniques. So for weekly assignments, I have the student's practice scales, finger exercises, and chord changes.
