Instruments: Piano Voice Keyboard
I have been teaching private piano and voice lessons for over 20 years, and I still love it! I love teaching all ages, beginner thru advanced. As an undergraduate, I was tapped to teach for my university's preparatory music department. After graduation, I started teaching privately, and I've never looked back. In addition to teaching privately, I have also taught music and movement classes, and that experience has helped me learn how to effectively incorporate movement in order to help students learn (especially busy little ones who don't need to be sitting for an entire half hour lesson anyway). I have been teaching percussion lessons since 2010, when I lived in Norfolk, Virginia. I began teaching young K-5 students the basics of percussion like proper technique, posture, note recognition and values, different styles of music, etc. I began by asking the parents what their child was interested in and based on the conversation, I catered the lessons to each individual student. When I moved to Florida in 2013, I was a graduate assistant at Florida State University, an adjunct professor at Wallace Community College (AL), and an instructor at Mason's School of Music (K-8). I graduated with honors from the Appomattox Regional Governor's School for Arts and Technology in Petersburg, VA in 2005, and have a BFA in cello performance and music theory from Loyola University New Orleans. I have studied under Joel Krosnick, Tanya Anisimova, Neal Cary, Jason McComb, and Allen Nisbet, and have participated in masterclasses with Lynn Harrell, Clancy Newman, and Alisa Weilerstein, to name a few. First the skill level of the student must be determined. Then the goals of what the student wishes to learn and wants to be capable of playing. Next we will set goals together and a time frame to achieve their goals. I will then develop a lesson plan based on what the student wants to achieve with exercises and practice techniques to build the muscle memory and strength required to play. Read More
Instruments: Voice
I have been told that I am a very energetic and encouraging teacher - I want my students to succeed and to be happy in their singing! I defintely will not stay seated behind the piano for the entire lesson. I like to get up and get involved! I won't ask students to try anything that I won't demonstrate myself first, which I have found usually puts them at ease (this is especially true with children and teens.) I have been a voice student myself for many years, so I know how it feels to be in their shoes, and I try to be as constructive and encouraging as possible while helping them discover their voice. Instruments: Cello Music
My teaching style is engaging empathic and emphasis on repetition and finding strong points in students to keep them engaged while working on weaknesses. I encourage all students to work on memorizing repertoire, keeping correct posture, practicing a few times a week and performing for friends and family during the learning process. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Acknowledging accomplishments fuels the student as well as my self and insures a I can tailor the instruction for more growth later on. Read More
