I would go to the piano and try to make up songs that I could dance to, which then lead me to take piano lessons for 15 years. My experience in teaching began 15 years ago in working with church choirs and bands, and eventually becoming a Graduate Teaching Assistant from 2016-2018 in the Musical Theatre Opera department at Arizona State University. I have also taught at Childsplay in Tempe, AZ as a Music Director. As a piano performer, my experience has truly crossed all genres, ranging from performing in high-level jazz ensembles such as the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra to performing Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 as piano soloist with symphony orchestra. Beginning students for woodwinds (flute, clarinet, saxophone) usually start with the Essential Elements book. As they advance the next books are usually Breeze Easy book 2 followed by the Rubank Intermediate and Advanced Methods. Advanced students will break into instrument specific methods. Flute with use methods such as The Melodious Studies and Pares scales books, clarinets with use the Klose books and Saxophone students will use Ferling and Klose studies. I have worked with students aging from 6 with no training to 55 with 30 years of training. Every student is different and presents unique challenges. I find that the less a student know the easier it is to see improvement. Often with older players there are fundamental basics that are working against them that need correction.
