For piano students, I like to use the Alfred courses.  This method is great because they have courses of study for all ages and levels, and students can progress through several courses throughout their study.  For flute/clarinet students, I like to start with either Hal Leonard's Essential Elements or the Rubank methods books.  Once students have moved beyond the basics, I like to introduce solo repertoire that is appropriate for their level. My methods are fairly simple. No matter the age or experience level, fundamentals are key. This includes proper embouchure, good posture, effective warm ups, and a consistent practice routine. Once the fundamentals are secure, especially for younger students, I like to move on to more "fun" music, such as Rochut etudes or beginner level solo music. Teaching is a huge responsibilty that I do not take light heartedly. If we as teachers do a suburd job, it will have a huge effect on a students over all life. Musical education teaches us about the mind and body and balance between the two. It teaches us logic, problem solving, and creative thinking in balance with eachother.
