The first half of a typical voice lesson is spent on vocal warm-ups and vocalises. These consist of scales, arpeggios, vowel unification, breath work, etc. and have been accumulated from many teachers over a variety of traditions. Vocalises are the most important part of a solid vocal technique. The second half of lessons is spent working on repertoire either brought in by the student or assigned by myself. To be a better musician requires a strong solid foundation of the fundamentals. Clarinet maintenance, equipment, reeds. Body posture, finger position, embouchure. Musical understanding and expression, scales, etudes, and other repertoire. When I meet a new or prospective student, I first evaluate where in their training are they coming from. Developing those skills early in musical development predisposes a student to succeed.
