There is so much to learn in music, it can be tempting to try to teach concepts too quickly. However, an organized, logical approach that introduces one concept at a time works best. I would do the same with intermediate and advanced students. My early teachers started me on easy songs with finger exercises, especially how to play contrapuntally on the bass side. For beginning students, I would start with a teaching method of olden days, which is all free and printable online, giving the student a background directly from the masters as they move forward. It's important to keep the student interested and help them truly uncover their passion for music by letting them lead me to the appropriate places they want to go.
