Here are the things that I want to impart to my piano students in their first 10 weeks of lessons: That I love music and I love teaching them That music lessons are creative and exploratory That creating music is fun and easy That music can tell stories That music is more than pushing down keys That music is art and involves dynamics, speed, feeling, etc. That singing and moving to music is just a part of how we do things in music education That playing the piano the right way (ie. with the right technique) is really important The importance of understanding, feeling and moving to meter (duple/triple) The concept of home, tonic/dominant tonalities and being able to hear and create bass lines That music is made up of chords, patterns, and melodies That they can transpose music into different keys I use Alfred Piano Method, it also dives into intervallic reading, as described above. I would begin each lesson with a vocal warmup so that I can see where their tone is placed and if they are an alto/soprano/tenor/etc. I would ask what genres they are interested in or what types of music they like. If they have a song they'd want to learn, we would practice that song and work on technique so that they can perform it in a healthy and confident way. Read More

The majority of my teaching experience dates back to high school. I had two great cello students during my senior year playing cello and are still involved in the arts. My hope is to find students that are serious about making technical advancements on their instruments as well as having a deeper understanding of harmony and the connections between all genres of music. Robert G. is a Dallas-born saxophonist and composer. Read More

Technique, book work, and song work is how I prefer to split my lesson time. Breaking habits before they become bad ones! Books: The Real Book, Syncopation, Stick Control, etc...I have been teaching at The School of Rock for the past 5 years. Read More

My ultimate goal is to help each student of mine have a musical connection that they can take anywhere with them in life. It reminds me of a wonderful quote I hears a couple of years ago "everyone should have a little bit of music in their life: and that has been something that's stuck with me through my teaching every week. I love seeing my students light up over learning their favorite songs and getting little aha moments that change how they see music as a whole. Read More

My teaching style caters to each students needs. Exercises can be created and personalized to accomplish certain goals such as chop building and accuracy drills, or pattern recognition. My lessons are typically broken down into segments. Starting with ear training drills/music theory, warm up/scales, etude practice, and improvisation/free play at the end. The music theory will use "The Jazz Piano Book" by Mark Levine as a reference along with Berklee Theory 1-4 The songs that we learn can be picked by you! Read More
