For beginning students, I usually start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has a solid foundation on fundamentals, I begin to increase the rigor of the work. Each student is different, so I try to personalize their lessons. I like for every student to have at least one solo piece to be working on. Hailing from Austin, Texas, Adrian J. is a rising Junior Viola performance major at the Eastman School of Music Studying under Professor George Taylor. Adrian began studying viola in his freshman year of highschool at McCallum Fine Arts Academy under Martha Carapetyan; he later went on to study at the Interlochen Arts Academy in his senior year under the teaching of Renee Skerik. For children, my foundational methods include Leonard, Krueger, Clarke, Arban, Reinhardt, Rizzetto, Pearson, and Rubank. Solo and ensemble repertoire is introduced at the appropriate time. Time is also spent on improvisation, writing original compositions, and learning music that the students have brought to the lesson. For adults, we focus on what students are interested in working on, regardless of their ability level. My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching marching band eight years ago. After graduating from Tarleton State University in 2014, I began teaching at the junior high and high school levels. In between teaching classes I would help students after school with working on their music for class as well as encouraging students to push themselves with more challenging literature.
