As music became more and more prevalent in her life, Kimberly added drums, clarinet, and writing to her list of musical talents. Through the years that followed, Kimberly has immersed herself into the constructions of many styles of music. Kimberly was born and grew up in the small town Okolona, MS. However, her musical journey began in Memphis, TN. Memphis was where she developed her musical tastes and interests. Everything depends on what instrument the student is learning. For violin, viola, and cello lessons I typically use a few different method books and handout sheets for the first few lessons, and then switch to using Suzuki books once the basic concepts have been mastered. For ukulele students I try to find out what the student is interested and tailor their lessons to include the types of songs they want to learn to play. Read More

As aforementioned, every student is different. What inspires one particular student may not inspire another. I find it important to establish early on what motivates the student, and incorporate that into every lesson in some facet. Along with the lesson, I also make it a point to establish and encourage consistent practice routines that make practicing the instrument more rewarding and less monotonous. Establishing good practice techniques from the very beginning is essential, as they will be more likely to keep consistent with beneficial practice throughout their musical career. Read More

I have certain methods that are useful from beginners to advanced students. I always meet a student where they are at and then guide them to gain the skills that they require for the goals they want to achieve. I don't subscribe to the notion that one MUST read music to play music - that is not how most of the world works, but I am a large advocate of being literate. Read More

While teaching to read music is at the core of my approach, I also encourage my students to improvise, play popular songs by ear, and follow chord charts. I regularly offer student recitals, providing an opportunity for a group experience, peer feedback, and growth in self-confidence at the instrument. My lessons are fun, and I like to mix things up by giving my students both serious and fun pieces to work on. Read More

The most important aspect of music, for me, is to enjoy what you are doing. I entered the world of music as an escape from my rigorous Engineering curriculum. The last thing I want is for my students to become too stressed or frustrated with their learning. Therefore, I ensure that all students go at a comfortable pace while setting challenging, but realistic, goals for themselves. I will work with my students to set a list of goals and push them in that direction so they can experience the satisfaction that comes with such accomplishments. Read More

I work closely with my students on crafting a lesson plan that best suits their interests. I've never been a homework guy; instead, I like to inspire my students by following their desired goals. Want to learn how to play like Metallica? Let's do it. Want to write songs like Taylor Swift? I'm game. Want to play bass like Flea? That's a challenge I'm up for. I like to consider myself as not only a teacher, but also as a bandmateyour goals are also mine, and we're working together to help you achieve them. Read More
