I tailor each of my lessons to the needs and desires of each individual. I am fond of using method books such as Hal Leonard's Essential Elements or Bruce Peterson's Standard of Excellence (or, with school children in a band program, whatever their method book may be), but I also like to bring separate handouts or sheets of exercises, drills, and songs that I have created over the years. I've found the best way to teach is to cater to each student's interest. While early or beginning players may require some fundamental grunt work, there is always a way to assure that it's fun too. Earlier students would need to start learning the basics: rhythm, learning to read, developing technique through scales etc. of which there are many methods. As students mature, I feel the Suzuki method for aspiring classical students is the best route (there are multiple books in this series) along with some other extensive and more challenging works. I have an extensive background in music education and have held various positions as church music director, organist, pianist, directed youth and adult choirs, and have helped home schooled students complete music and arts requirements. My name is Joshua. I am a 26 year old pianist who has been playing for 20 years. I am an experienced teacher, performer, and composer. I play around town in a Jazz duo, as well as in a 3 person band. I have been teaching for over 5 years and enjoy helping my students expand their mind and reach their goals for musical education.
