For beginning students, I start with a method book that provides them with both aural, visual, and kinesthetic instruction. In addition, I work with my students to develop a curriculum that is high individualized and caters to their needs and, more importantly, their interests. For intermediate and advanced students, I focus on repertoire, etudes, and coordination studies, in order to build technique while learning the standard repertoire pieces. For children, it is important to know the fundamental (produce sound, pitch, breathing, etc) and it has to be FUN! I start off with the book Singing Lessons for Little Singers and when start introducing songs as the student progress. For adults, it's best to know what each students want and need and I'll walk them according to their needs. Techniques and repertoire comes hand in hand and I like to have a balance of both.I want to create an environment where the students will be learning what they want to learn balanced out with what they need to learn. I have been a professional musician and music teacher for almost 20 years. In 2016, I graduated with a doctorate in saxophone performance from Texas Christian University. At TCU, I studied saxophone with Joe Eckert. He is a well-known jazz and classical saxophonist and was the lead alto and director of the "Airmen of Note," the premier jazz ensemble of the US Air Force, for 20 years. In high school, I first started working with kids through Special Olympics, mission trips, and church. As an educator, I am soft-spoken, patient, and warm, creating an understanding environment. My expectations of my students, though high, are extremely clear. It is up to the educator to modify for every student. I believes that the importance of music in the schools allows students to connect with each art and more importantly, themselves, foster responsibility, and discover a potential lifelong joy in music making. My first memories of teaching goesback to middle school when I would tutor the younger students in my classes! My love for teaching grew and throughout my college and post-college experience I taught clarinet lessons, music theory and appreciation to students of all ages. From working with Pre-K children through older adults, I make each lesson personal and an experience for each student.
