In high school I won the MD Distinguished Scholarship in music performance, which allowed me to pursue a career in music performance. I attended UMBC and completed a music performance degree. Later I earned a degree in Music Education, and have been teaching in public school since 2003. I've taught privately, in after school Guitar Ensembles and Rock n Roll Workshops, as well as Life-Long Learning Classes. With a beginner student, I start with the basics. We learn how to properly hold the instrument and how to tune the strings. From there, the students will learn the fundamentals of finger placement and basic strumming. Once the student feels comfortable, we start to learn different chords and scales. At this point, students will begin learning songs with basic chords. Once we get past this stage the lessons become more tailored to the individual student and we begin to learn and play music that the student is interested in. Read More

For beginning students, I usually start with rudimental percussion grips and playing. I usually go off of Stick Control. Once the student has progressed further, I will judge how far along they are and customize they're learning abilities with their exercises and repertoire to learn.
