I know it helped me when I was studying voice. Along with voice I find it important that a student understands and grasps the concepts of general music theory and the history of the pieces and composers of which they will be studying in hopes that such information will create an even deeper understanding and love for music. My students will be encouraged to enter competitions and recitals, as well as finding music that they would like to perform, so that they can feel good about their voice and stay motivated to learn. For elementary students, I usually have them work out of Standard of Excellence books or Rubank Elementary method books and supplement them with fun popular music they enjoy to play. For middle school and high school students, I encourage them to work on appropriate solos, scales, and duets we can play together. I believe that students learn by DOING, so I bring my microphone to every lesson to give them that hands on experience. I plan on having multiple recitals throughout the year so students can experience singing solo as well as in group settings. I also love to challenge my students with new songs and fun exercises weekly, making sure we are seeing that personal growth as we progress.
