I am trained in the Suzuki method and will typically start my beginning cello students in this if they are not already interested in another method. If you are interested in a different method I will typically alter my teaching to accommodate. Early lessons typically work on establishing a strong technical foundation so the student will be able to pursue music that speaks to them. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Alfred's Basic Piano Library or Piano Adventures Faber method. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. This could include jazz, classical or pop music. At all levels (beginner-advanced), I teach piano performance, technique, music theory, ear training, and sight reading. My curriculum follows the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) standards, and students are strongly encouraged to take RCM examinations as they progress through each level. Although every student's piano journey will look different based on their musical goals, preferences, etc., the RCM standards provide guidelines upon which I design a personal curriculum for each student. I'm a recent transplant to Brooklyn, NY after spending seven wonderful years studying and working in Boston! Originally from Gainesville, Florida, I first learned piano, then added saxophone, clarinet, flute, and bass in my middle and high school years. I went on to receive a Bachelor's degree from the University of Miami and a Master's degree from the New England Conservatory in Boston. With beginning students, I use exercises from Suzuki and Essential Elements books as a basis for note reading, but I also frequently use "echo" or "call-and-response" playing. I find this is especially important in developing a student's ear for pitch and tone early on. As a student progresses and their musical interests develop, I combine standard classical repertoire that I grew up playing with song transcriptions of film, jazz, and rock music formatted to match each student's ability level and current technical goals.
