I began teaching five years ago with a diverse studio that covered everything from musical theatre to hip hop. I currently teach at a music studio here in Jacksonville, where I have a large studio of private students as well as group music classes for elementary and preschool aged children. I emphasize exploration and curiosity and encourage my students to explore multiple genres of music. first i ask what the student desires to learn . what type of music etc. once i have taught a few songs i ask the student to write a list of songs that they would like to learn. i teach how to find the key that the student sings in and how to transpose the song into that key. if the student does not wish to sing i teach them how the instrument of their choice works . again regardless of the instrument i usually am able to teach a student two songs in an hour lesson . one in four four timing and one in three four timing . there is nothing better than to see the light come on in a students face and see the confidence of ' i can do this ! My first teaching experiences were with my father during solo and ensemble. Having hired me as an accompanist for his students, I found myself rehearsing these students moreso than accompanying them. From that point I felt encouraged to teach and help others perfect their craft. My biggest influences would have to be my past teachers, one of which taught me younger and the other as I matured. I believe that while learning to read and write sheet music, developing technique and feel, and understanding music theory are all important, the most integral part of learning an instrument - as fundamental as it sounds - is to use your ears! Music is my passion, the guitar is my instrument. I taught myself through books, videos, mentors, loop pedals, HOURS and HOURS of practice, and 8+ years of live performance and improvisation throughout the 12+ years of being a guitarist. Because I learned on my own, I remember the speed bumps and learning curves in the beginning.
