At the first lesson is just seeing where they are and what kind of music they would want to play(hymnal songs, gospel songs, soundtracks, opera, classical etc). Then at the beginning of each lesson would be theory(note recognition, counting, fingering etc). Then review on what they practiced for the week and if they are confident with the pieces add a few more songs. It is important that each student progress at their own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals and expectations. Acknowledging any and all accomplishments are key to fueling the students desire to learn more. My students can expect to receive homework and practice goals after each lesson. I want to find what inspires my students so I will always tailor my instruction to their wants and desires. During each lesson, we will start with warming up through scales and stretching and then moving to our practice goals for the week, through the practice goals we can determine what next weeks lesson should look like and what the student can focus on outside of their lesson. I use a variety of methods, custom-fit for each student individually. I teach Classical and church piano, along with sightreading, ear training, performance techniques, music theory, and other techniques specially designed to give my students the most well-rounded learning experience possible. I tend to prefer Piano Adventures for younger students and teens, and incorporate use of the corresponding app whenever possible. I also focus on helping students learn to play by ear, since I believe this is the quickest way to feel a mastery over the instrument! Read More

I have experience participating in, working with, and conducting college level choirs and I am still gaining experience. I have also passed Piano Proficiency in my undergrad education. This proficiency test covers major and minor scales in all twelve keys in two octaves with proper fingering, playing a piece from memory, sight reading open score (a four-part choral work), and I have had to harmonize a melody using the three basic I, IV, V7 chords in a major key and i, iv, V7 chords in a minor key.
