The one book I use for my students is Ted Reed's "Progressive Steps to Syncopation For The Modern Drummer". I use this book for my own benefit on a daily basis. Its interpretation and application is limited only by the student's or instructor's imagination. This book is such a great resource for assisting the student in learning basic reading skills. I started out as a percussionist, studying throughout high school and in to college at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. During my time in Boston, I discovered a bustling bluegrass music scene and my focus switched to stringed instruments, namely the mandolin and the violin. I have been playing music for over 15 years and have earned two degrees in music (University of Colorado, Manhattan School of Music). Some of my teachers include the world class Orin O'Brien and Tim Cobb from the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Orchestra. In my undergrad I was a finalist for the annual concerto competition and have I performed internationally in Canada as well as Japan. Throughout college and graduate school I have taught dozens of students of all ages, raging between 5 years old and 50. Private lessons in students homes, my own space, and at several different music schools, including CJC music, and the All Children's art Center in Boonton. Everyone has different expectations; some want to become proficient, while others want to become virtuosos, and I frame my lessons around the student's goals.
