What do you want to learn? I encourage all students to convey to me their interests! I can come up with suggestions as much as you'd like, but my favorite lessons are the ones where a student has his or her own goal, and I'm able to help them achieve this goal in some way. We will always have technique exercises and drills to work on, but we'll never lose sight of why we do all this technique building in the first place - to get better at something we love! Read More

I enjoy teaching because I am sharing my love for music with my students. The most rewarding part of teaching is watching students grow personally as they learn to play and instrument and improve their musical and technical skills. I have taught every age, from 4 year old beginners to adult students. I've worked with college music majors who are looking for an extra bit of help, and high school students preparing for all-state and all-district auditions. Read More

It is important to me that each of my students learns to love their instrument. But, even more than the love of their instrument, is the importance of knowing and understanding one's instrument. I offer positive reinforcement, encouraging my student in realistic goals. I acknowledge accomplishments that help fuel mystudent's desires to progress. However, I do not hide from the fact that pursuing music is a discipline. A well structured and commited practice time offers the best benefits. Read More

I always start by asking the student if he/she has any goals or upcoming performances they'd like to concentrate on. If so, we focus mainly on that goal, while also incorporating vocal exercises and other methods to continually improve the voice. Otherwise, we will start with mainly vocal exercises (which will grow in difficulty as we master the easier ones), and after a few weeks, start applying what we've learned in the exercises to some songs (usually folk songs, art songs, Broadway, occasionally some opera). As a recent graduate, I am still pretty new at this! However, I am incredibly motivated and confident that you will benefit greatly from the skills I have to offer. My educational experience includes; volunteer work at Eisenhower Middle School in Manhattan, KS; observation of Buhler High School's choral department; private voice lessons with two college age males at K-State; and a current position as a para at Lawrence High School. I believe that an understanding of music theory and learning to read music is the foundation of success for both my piano and voice students which is why I typically require my voice students to be taking piano simultaneously with voice. For beginning piano students, I will typically begin with the James Bastien Primer/Level 1 Series with the focus split equally between theory and technique. I require students to fill out a practice log monthly to ensure that they are maintaining the knowledge and skills they learn in lessons and so that parents can be involved in their progress.
