For beginning students, I start with the "I Can Read Music" and Suzuki Book 1. I am not a certified Suzuki teacher, nor do I teach in sync with the Suzuki style, but I do use the Suzuki book repertoire as I like the progression of ideas presented in the series. For middle school and high school students, I often work on all-district and all-state audition repertoire, prepare the students for school orchestra playing exams, or help them with tricky spots in their school orchestra pieces. For complete beginners I use the usual method books used in the public schools.  As I get to know the student I tailor the lessons to their skill level and personality to teach the fundamentals.  More intermediate students I look at what they do well and areas they need to work on such as embouchure or breathing technique.  I teach theary and make sure the student learns how to read music.  More advanced students I will teach repertoire and advanced books such as Arban's Mehod book.  I will always make sure the fundamentals are taught regardless of the skill level.
