With beginner students I start by establishing good foundation through method books by Simandl and Todor Toshev which include technical exercises for both hands as well as little popular melodies to keep the student interested and develop their musicianship. With more advanced bassists I introduce exercises, etudes and methods by Franois Rabbath, Bottesini, Hrabe and others as well are pieces form the standard double bass repertoire ranging from baroque to contemporary composition. I typically start woodwind students with the Standard of Excellence Comprehensive Band Method series. I like to use the Faber Piano Adventures Series or the Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course for piano instruction. In addition to the method book, I like to incorporate physical/breathing exercises, supplemental warm-ups, sight-reading, music theory worksheets, and student selected repertoire in lessons. I also encourage students to create their own compositions.
