I am a positive and dedicated musician and music teacher who has a unique background of formal classical training and experience in various other genres. I have 12 years of classical training on the violin, have taught private violin and viola lessons to more than 300 students over the course of 6 summers through the Hempfield School District, participated in the NAfME All-Eastern Orchestra, performed for a year as the bluegrass and old-time fiddler in the Joe Hillman Band (Philadelphia, PA), performed as the celtic fiddler in The Ogham Stones (Lancaster, PA) for one year, and have led my own band for 2 years as a singer, songwriter and guitar player. My teaching does not cut corners. I often tell young students to watch the movie "Karate Kid" and play close attention to the "Wax on, wax off" scenes. (Fortunately, there are practice supplements using play along tracks that make this process more fun and less tedious). I not teach "songs", but I do teach the language of drumming and the language of music. I am an advanced reader and all of my students will be required to read at least some music, however I do understand that many students learn by ear. Read More

Instruments: Bass Guitar Music

I'm a passionate and motivated instructor who loves working with students and sharing my love of music. In 2005 I graduated from The Players School of Music. Performing with my favorite musicians and releasing my own music has been some of the greater experiences of my life as a musician, and I've had the opportunity to play with my biggest influences and call them my colleagues. My hope is that the students I have will be able to have the same type of experiences by applying the tools I give them in their lessons. Read More

“Russ is one of the absolute best students I have ever had in my long teaching career at Berklee College of Music. Russ is very talented, smart, highly disciplined and open minded as a musician. Having Russ as a teacher will be an experience where the student will receive an effective, focused, and open minded approach to the students individual musical needs and interests.” -Dave Weigert, Drum Instructor, Berklee College of Music. I began teaching private lessons while in college, teaching classical, electric and acoustic guitar. For the past 5 years that I have been in Nashville I have been teaching again for the last 2. I have experience in teaching students as young as 5 and as old as 65. There is no age limit on learning! Something I was always told in my lessons both, as a teenager and in college was that it is vastly more important to practice a little each day than to try and cram a marathon session into one day. I settled in Atlanta in 1973, and started school in 1975. I went as far with school as my VA benefits would get me and then I left school, and got a job teaching in a local Atlanta store. I have been teaching, practicing and playing full time ever since.I love showing students how to work to learn, once they see how work pays off you can't stop them. I have my own Learn To Play Guitar book that I now use as handouts that have vocabulary, open chords, bar chords, inside chords, along with major and relative scales. Read More

I have used many different methods over the years and will supplement any method book to meet the individual needs of the student. My preferred method for young students is the FJH Harris Young Beginner's Guitar Method series. For older students I tend to use either Mel Bay or Hal Leonard methods to teach the fundamentals and then add onto them with whatever suits the student best. For advanced students I prefer the William Leavitt methods from Berklee University Press, which will be a challenge for anyone! Read More

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
