I began teaching private lessons in 1989. My focus is to understand what learning style my students have and base my teaching methods on their individual needs. In college I studied pedagogies (teaching methods) for band, orchestra and majored in vocal and classroom education. Since achieving my degree in teaching kindergarten through 12th grade education, I have worked in Preschool, Elementary, Middle School, and High School settings as well with the elderly. Read More

Throughout the past 10 years, I have taught neighborhood kids and friends how to play the piano both beginning and intermediately. I like to encourage everybody that consistency is the key to learning (for beginners). Not necessarily practicing for long periods of time, but frequently. Better to practice for 10-15 minutes three to five times per day than for an hour or two all at once. I've found that the best foundation comes from scales. Read More

I am a voice teacher who teaches from a holistic approach! So I take into consideration all of the elements that impact vocal health & performance. I offer virtual zoom lessons and also virtual studio session coaching. I make my lesson plans customizable to the client and what they are specifically looking to learn or achieve. I start usually with Piano Adventures by Nancy and Randall Faber including Technique and Artistry Book, Theory book and Lesson Book . Additional solo repertoire might include Faber books on Jazz and Blues or Musical Theatre or Classics for children. Adults may start with Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course. I tend to custom the lesson plans related to the students interests too . I try to find out what the student is interested in and guide my instruction to keep the lessons uplifting and inspiring no matter what the ability level. Read More

I've been teaching lessons for students and also giving advise for others for 35+ years. I've been told that I have a very gentle nature. I guess it's the way I was brought up. anyway.....I teach to a students strengths and weaknesses. For example; One may have a young sax student that has very good sound right out the gate but cannot understand the language on the page. Conversely, the student that gets the language right way, but alas, the thing sounds like a duck call! those are specific issues that need to be addressed. Read More

I graduated from McNally Smith College of Music magna cum laude in 2011 with a bachelors in vocal performance. I played everywhere from Duluth. Minnesota to Lima, Peru: sharing the stage with artists as diverse as Andres Prado and Judi Donaghy. In addition to my McNally Smith Degree, I received master classes from Bobby McFerrin and the New York Voices. Passionate about giving back to the community, I instructed voice and piano students at the Urban Hub, a community center for inner city youth in Minneapolis MN. Read More

My teaching style is very focused on the student's desire to learn what they want. Very early into taking on a new student, I try to find what/who inspires them. Doing so allows me to tailor my teaching to each individual student. I also like to have 3 main "small improvement" objectives for each lesson. There's improvement on what we did during our last lesson, improvement during the lesson with something new I will introduce, and improvement for our next lesson with something I will give to the students to work on themselves after our lesson. What does a normal practice session look like for you?
A practice is different according to the purpose. If you want to work for performance including concert or opera. You have to study a lots of things. For example, foreign diction (Italian, French, German etc.) are very important. Each language has a different accent and intonation. Those things should be trained many times. After that singers can be allowed to sing. Second, if singers want to practice their sound I strongly recommend to use natural voice through humming, lip trill, pure vowels.
Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
I normally used to use a vocal pedagogy book as a reference. However, students do not need to use it. It will be used for making them understand specific terms. There are good example about our body. Also, the most useful information is that the book explains wrong information about teaching singer. It helps me to fix students who have bad habit. Second, for better understanding, I generally used video from youtube or NATS website (Nation Association of Teachers of Singing).
When did you decide to become a professional musician? Was it a gradual decision or was there a defining moment for you?
I decided to study voice after praying a lots. During the prayer, God told me He wants me to praise Him. So, I was really inspired Him. That makes me to make strong decision.
If you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing instead?
When I was young my goal was being a math teacher. So, if I didn't study music I might be a math teacher.
What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
My music background is basically from church. So, I love to listen to christian music.
If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
I can play several instruments. The first instrument was a piano. i started to learn it when I was really young. Other instruments are a guitar and a drum. I participated church band since I have been middle school student. I really enjoyed it as singing.
What is your dream piece to perform and why?
My dream role is Rigoletto in Opera "Rigoletto." It is hard to find title role for the baritone. This opera is one of them and require high technique. Furthermore, this opera have been loved by audiences in the world. Fortunately, I performed this opera a couple of years ago and I got good review by Twin Cities Art Reader. However, I didn't perform with orchestra. So, if I have one more chance to sing that role I want to perform with the orchestra.
If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
D.M.A. University of Minnesota, Voice performance
M.M. University of Texas at Austin, Voice performance
M.M. Myoungji University, Voice performance
B.M. Myoungji University, Voice performance
I have four degrees for voice performance in Korea and America. To get those degrees, I spent 15 years for studying. Even though it took long time I was able to know how to sing well.
