For beginning students, I vary my teaching methods quite a bit. I often take on students in households that already have method books purchased, and I have never had an issue with using them. At times, more books are needed, but I will allow the student to utilize these already-owned options, as I myself will supplement extra music. Students will often mentally understand what they need to do, but the necessary motor skills take time and repetition to achieve their goals. Read More

While keeping the fingers down and close to the fingerboard, the student may gradually build up the tempo using a variety of different bowings and rhythmic groupings. I strongly encourage students to balance their practice by studying scores, reading books and articles about music and other subjects, and attending concerts, master classes and lessons from their peers. I always talk to my students about the physical function of the vocal instrument in the first few lessons, especially if the student has not had voice lessons in the past. My goal is to uncover each student's natural voice, as free from strain and technical difficulties as possible. Bass and guitar are both physical instruments in their own way, and getting acclimated to the feel of it is key to having success on it. For bass, I typically teach out of the Suzuki book series, while as for guitar, I use the Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, however, I am happy to teach whatever method a student or their parents feel strongly about.
