The entire room had a smell of old paper, years of rosin buildup in the corners, and the smell of varnish from the short row of school instruments that students could borrow behind the tiniest teacher desk I had ever seen. Because I learn a lot by performing, I also encourage my students to perform as often as possible, in whatever capacity they feel comfortable - auditions, recitals, musicals, gigs, concerts, karaoke, you name it! I believe it is really important to hone your craft on stage, in addition to constant practice in the studio and at home. For beginning children students I typically start with Hal Leonard or a similar reputable music book.  Once the students has a grasp of the fundamentals we will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate to their age and skill level.  For adult students, I find out what the student is interested in and create a lesson plan that is fun and challenging no matter their skill level. I offer the Suzuki method of teaching for all beginners and pair it with Essentials for Strings to engage music theory into the lessons. As the students progress there are more books to choose and duets to practice Chamber Music and more advanced techniques. For Beginning students who are children, I typically start with the Suzuki Method, and essentials for Strings. After they have graduated and begin reading and understanding the basic concepts of music , and reading we begin to play duets and test of types of music. Read More
