For a typical lesson Ill teach half basics and theory and the other half songs or anything the students interested in. I am adamant that the student's are practicing at least 30 mins a day. For guitar I strongly recommend using Hal Leonards Guitar method books even if were only working out of it for a quarter of the lesson. For piano I recommend a Hal Leonard book without question. The most important aspect of music, for me, is to enjoy what you are doing. I entered the world of music as an escape from my rigorous Engineering curriculum. The last thing I want is for my students to become too stressed or frustrated with their learning. Therefore, I ensure that all students go at a comfortable pace while setting challenging, but realistic, goals for themselves.
