My music teaching experience began all the way back in 2011 when I got to be a section leader for the Charleston Trojans Marching Band alto saxophones section. My interest in piano grew and my most current teaching experience was student teaching at Hayt Elementary School in Chicago, IL (in CPS). I got to teach lessons in music to classes of 25-30 students for 8 hours a day, and did everything from singing songs to playing piano, but everything to get children experiencing music and tapping into their potential. For beginner's, I do typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements books. For intermediate, I'll evaluate what materials they've used thus far in their lessons and go from there. If someone is familiar with a set of books in a positive way, there's no reason to change the books they're using. I do believe, however, there is profit in a variety of repertoire, so a diverse lesson is key. I have learned from experience that simply learning one genre (classical, jazz, showtunes) is less desirable than having a familiar ear to multiple styles. Read More

I believe each student has unique gifts. I love watching my students thrive by encouraging self-exploration as we learn about music. If a student loves playing by ear, we seek knowledge of composition more, if they are inspired to play Star Wars, we add that to the repertoire. If a good solid foundation is built through the sequential lesson books along with motivating material, retention is higher. I have been playing and writing music for 15 years. I began playing guitar when I was 15 years old, and throughout my high school career I played in several different bands. By the time I got to college I performed with a classic rock band and began studying music theory for piano. In Delta State Universities Interdisciplinary program I began to take in a lot of musical knowledge very quickly. I learned many tools including: songwriting, music production, audio recording, synthesis, piano, live sound, mixing and even took a film scoring class where we put music to video which is a lot of fun. In my second book I devote most of the curriculum to teaching the concepts of chord theory with movable chord patterns and learning to play scales over chords for improvisation.
