Other experiences I have teaching include being a Mentor in Illini Mentoring Program (mentioned above), along with being a part of the UofI-Juvenile Detention Center Arts Project in spring of 2017. This coalition formed of UI students and professors helped to generate meaningful musical experiences for incarcerated youth, providing them with a possibility to be kids again in trying times, and to promote restorative justice. Since 2017, I have gotten the opportunity to teach lessons here and their to peers (college age), but I'm ready to delve into the exciting world of private teaching and help share my knowledge and passion for music with others ready to learn. Teaching music is my calling in life. It has taken me many years to actually say that with full confidence, but when I consider the joy I experience while teaching, and also look at the growth and improvement my students experience throughout their time with me, it is really clear: this is what I love, and this is what I have a unique gifting to do. I have two degrees in music: a Master's in Vocal Performance from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, and a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from Iowa State University. During lessons, I typically focus on a balance of instrumental technique and music reading. However, Im flexible and happy to adapt to each student's preferences. If a student prefers to prioritize one skill over the other, I will gladly tailor lessons to match their goals. Additionally, we work on developing and applying effective practice strategies to ensure steady progress. Since every student progresses at different rates and excels in different areas, I adapt my teaching style to meet their unique needs. Read More

I employ the use of scales and harmonizing techniques if so desired, but mainly focus on what the student would like to be able to accomplish in his or her time with me. I like to let them pursue their own directions while overseeing that they learn the fundamental aspects of their chosen genre or genres. Learning and especially music should maintain FUN as a central priority, because without excitement over the topic and enthusiasm in development, it becomes easy to get bored and walk away from the activities.
