Long-term goals may have to do with technique--for voice, examples may be releasing tension or singing with proper breath support. I feel like I have a very loose teaching style that is grounded in the fundamentals. I do not put deadlines or timelines on any student's progress, and I also realize that each student's needs are unique to each and every person. I work to give each and every student a very solid understanding of music (being able to sit at a piano or pick up a horn and play music, be able to recognize and understand the theoretical aspects of music, aurally discern chord progression and when a wrong not is played to understand why chords move they way they do and be able to easily hear your own musitakes). I play the banjo, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and drums. From 1976 to 1980,I was a member of The John Herald Band, and played venues from the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, California to Carnegie Hall in New York. He then formed The Lewis Brothers, Philadelphia's premier bluegrass band, which performed at the Philadelphia Folk Festival as well as hundreds of clubs throughout Philadelphia, the Northeastern US, and Europe. I teach my students to read music as well as to play by ear. I host 2 recitals each year. We learn one song start to finish and I hire a professional band to learn and perform the songs with my students at a local establishment or at my studio. I encourage all of my students to perform with our recital band. As far as books, I prefer to use the "new Breed", by Gary Chester, the ''Art of Bop Drumming'', by John Riley , and the ''encyclopedia of reading rhythms'', by Garry Hess, but there are many other books I recommend for specific needs.
