I began taking lessons on the guitar at age 8 and continues with a few different instructors all throughout my life, and still do. I started studying Classical Guitar my Sophomore year of High School. I started teaching the guitar in 1990 at age 18 in a local music store. I was able to perform and teach while earning an Associates in Liberal Arts at The University of Cincinnati, where my intention was to enter their Jazz guitar program as I had begun studying it at their prep department. Regardless of what percussion studies a student does and does not want to pursue, I start with a strong focus on the nuts and bolts of percussive technique. Doing these techniques can open the door to any number of advanced percussion areas. However, just because rudimentary techniques are necessary doesn't mean they can't be fun! Whatever area of percussion a student is interested in, we immediately begin applying the core areas of technique to that area. Read More

For younger beginning students, I tend to use more high-energy and captivating method books like Mark Wessels' "Fresh Approach." We will spend a good amount of time on fundamentals to ensure success with at-home practicing. For middle school students, I use more practical methods and techniques that steer them towards high achievement in their school's music curriculum. This would include books like Mitchell Peters' "Developing Dexterity", "Elementary Snare Drum Studies", "Intermediate Snare Drum Studies", and repertoire for middle school honor band and solo and ensemble pieces. Every student is different. Having only one teaching style would be very limiting and would eventually push some students away. I try to find out how each student best receives information, as well as what motivates them to play and become a better musician. From here I can form the lesson around the student's needs, making sure that we are both successful in the process. I try to have fun during lessons and create a personal bond with my students. For beginning students, I combine multiple elements to understand the various aspects of their new instruments. With a combination of videos for inspiration, singing for audiation, and moving for connection to the instrument and how our muscles respond to it. My lessons rarely consist of sitting for the entire time. I believe that in the short time we have in lessons, it is more important to expose students to a variety of resources to investigate their new endeavor than it is to repeat repertoire for the sake of a quick result. This calling demands love and imagination, where the teacher and the student are invited on an adventure where we both strive to leave each lesson asking ourselves how the next might be better and how to better engage ourselves in our unique goals. It is my mission to teach your child the language of music. It is my goal to teach with this single purpose: my students will be able to give voice to that which they cannot and for which they have no words. Read More
