For players just starting out, I always start with the Hal Leonard Essential Elements book. It is a good place to learn the notes, as well as how to read music on necessary. As a trumpet player, I am a firm believer in the Arban Complete Comservatory Method, and Clarke Technical Studies. These are the backbone of my fundamentals. My teaching style is just like most I think. I don't rush with the students. Always trying to go slow and make sure the students understands everything. I've gotten pretty good at figuring out when the students get what I'm trying to teach. If I feel like I'm going to fast I'll stop think about what I'm doing and slow down. If you don't know how to read music we can focus part of the lesson on music theory and the rest on learning from recordings and playing by ear.
