For beginning students who are children, I use a variety of methods, including Hal Leonard's Children's Guitar Method, Suzuki methodologies (I am NOT a Suzuki-certified teacher), and materials I've developed over my 25 year teaching career. I emphasize basic technique for the left and right hands, and I make sure they learn the basics of reading music. For older students (middle school-age to adult), I tend to let the student lead. I've helped new beginner students start their flute exploration with the correct embouchure, posture, and technique right from the beginning. I've worked with students who have been on their own for a while, helping to correct any bad habits that had snuck in. I've helped students reinforce the technical basics of scales, daily exercises, breathing, and long tones so that their music soars. I've helped students with specific solos and band music so that a future performance is as close to perfect as possible. Read More

I am 74 years young, have been married for 42 years, have six children, two birth and four adopted from Ethiopia, live near Parker on a 5-acre property with 4 horses, several dogs and a husband. I am healthy, flexible and friendly. I play with a flutist at several assisted living facilities. We play the oldies, a couple of classical pieces, a march, a polka and seasonal music that the residents recognize (at least they recognize most of the songs). Read More

For beginning students, I always start with the Essential Elements book 1. I have found that the combination of foundational teaching and songs that accompany what was just discussed helps students feel like they are applying what they have learned to something the can show off to people to people around them. Once they move past that, I try to introduce solo repertoire that is appropriate for their level. This helps prepare them for future solo recitals. Read More
