The last thing I want is for my students to become too stressed or frustrated with their learning. For a typical lesson Ill teach half basics and theory and the other half songs or anything the students interested in. I am adamant that the student's are practicing at least 30 mins a day. For guitar I strongly recommend using Hal Leonards Guitar method books even if were only working out of it for a quarter of the lesson. For piano I recommend a Hal Leonard book without question. I do pass some handouts of pieces,exercises,etc that I feel are worthy for the student. Read More

One student may be working with Schaum's Pre-A Book, while another might be starting out with Thompson's Teaching Little Fingers to Play. As aforementioned, every student is different. What inspires one particular student may not inspire another. I find it important to establish early on what motivates the student, and incorporate that into every lesson in some facet. Along with the lesson, I also make it a point to establish and encourage consistent practice routines that make practicing the instrument more rewarding and less monotonous. Once the student has grasped a good level of fundamentals, I begin to introduce level appropriate solo repertoire pieces not only of my choosing, but of the students choosing as well.
