As a teacher, I've learned so much from my colleagues and peers, but likely not as much as I've learned from my students. I've found that some teaching practices are outdated and I think I can bring a fresh and modern perspective to teaching music. I like to base my lessons around the student's natural curiosity and desire for learning music. Whether that be trying to play in the school band or wanting to learn a Led Zeppelin song, I believe that giving my students this ability to make their own decisions, helps them become more confident, motivated, and passionate about succeeding as a musician as well as in their own personal lives. Instruments: Piano Keyboard
Throughout the past 10 years, I have taught neighborhood kids and friends how to play the piano both beginning and intermediately. I like to encourage everybody that consistency is the key to learning (for beginners). Not necessarily practicing for long periods of time, but frequently. Better to practice for 10-15 minutes three to five times per day than for an hour or two all at once. I've found that the best foundation comes from scales. Read More
Instruments: Trumpet Euphonium French Horn Music
My teaching experience is composed of a combination of all my past professors. I have taken what works and does not work for the last ten years. Mr. Scarlatti taught me about accuracy and technique, Mr. Waidelich, who taught me to understand my musical needs, and Musicality, Mr. Hacker who challenged me in my reading, and performance, and Mr. Almeida who taught me to listen, to be consistent and the best at all I do wether difficult or easy. Teaching music is one of the most rewarding experiences for both the teacher and the student. I teach students at their own pace, focusing on taking them from where they are to there highest potential. I encourage realistic goals and strategies to reach their goals at every lesson. Having a very specific plan for how to improve is key for reaching your potential,I adapt my teaching to the student and work hard to find the most effective way to reach the student. Read More
Instruments: Piano Voice
Each student needs a long-term goal in mind for where they want their voice to be. I like to start out by setting a couple realistic goals for the long-term with my students, then breaking those goals down into manageable steps each associated with one or two pieces. I also want students to know that they are accomplishing their goals, so I have my students tape lessons and listen back later to hear their progress. Read More
Instruments: Violin Viola
I love watching students succeed and learn the viola or violin! This is why we go by the student's pace and work with their ability. I require a notebook or binder for me to record what the student will need to work on for the following lesson, which helps them remember what they're assigned, as well as keeping them accountable about expectations. (And it helps me to remember!) Accomplishments will always be acknowledged, as well as constructive comments about what needs to be improved both technically and musically. Read More
