I teach at the pace of the student, setting small achievable goals each lesson. I encourage students by acknowledging their progress and finding out what excites them. Students are encouraged to take what they've learned and participate in recitals, competitions, and any other musical opportunity they can find. I believe music should be taught as a means of personal expression, and so I also make sure to give students the tools they need to play in an expressive fashion, or even write their own music. Instruments: Piano
Students want to learn the piano for a variety of reasons. Some arent really sure they want to learn at all, but mom wants them to give it a shot! Others just want to learn that song on the radio! All are fine reasons to learn, and each deserves a personal approach. For very young students just learning the basics, structure provides direction and comfort, so Id recommend jumping into a beginners curriculum such as by Alfred or Hal Leonard and going from there. I am a beleiver that the solid foundation is the key to musical success. This foundation is broken down into 3 sections (mental, emotional and physical). I focus on the physical, lip strengh, arm and finger positions, and the correct breathing techniques. The mental and emotinal come with time and as the student grows these items will come naturally. The most importat item is to have fun, if your not having fun your intrest will fade. Read More
Instruments: Piano Voice
I have been teaching private lessons for 15 years and have loved every minute of it! I began just teaching piano instruction when I first started out, but as I went through college, I added voice to my instructional practices. I really encourage my students to take my 20 minute challenge: 20 minutes a day for 5 days. That equals 100 minutes a practice a week and will cause you as the student to see AMAZING results in your skill and proficiency. Read More
Instruments: Drums Orchestral Percussion
if you're a righty we will lead with the left. If you are a lefty we will lead with the right. I focus on evenness while playing and the only way to do that is to work on your "non-dominate" side. Every student; Beginner, novice or professional I work with on this. It opens you up to better independent drumming. We work on reading, writing, counting, sticking technique, rudiments, and drumset grooves for beginners. Read More
Instruments: Voice
Music fundamentals are most important in the beginning stages. When teaching kids I really focus on posture, breath, building repertoire, and technique. For adults, I start by finding out if they are adult beginner, or adult intermediate, depending on the knowledge of singing and technique. My instruction is really based on the students interest in repertoireand the rate at which they learn. Read More

Ibegan teaching private lessons from 2004 and tried to consistently teaching students in my home studio. I was a counselor and private lesson instructor at the OSU Flute Workshop from 2011 to 2013.
