Being a person and friend rather than a "teacher" helps establish a nice atmosphere during the lesson, although it is important to be able to show authority as needed. First and foremost the student needs to have fun at class, otherwise he/she won't work on his/her own at home. I believe it is important to play a lot in the lesson, playing along with the student, listening to tunes, or just jamming together, all of these examples help spark creativity, which is a very important part of every musician. I have advanced marching band/drumline experience, playing each different drum for multiple performances. I have performed in parades and football games, and competitively in settings like the Lucas Oil Stadium and Ross-Ade Stadium. Additionally, I am adept in concert/orchestral performance, having participated in large and small ensembles at Ball State University. I have also played for show choirs and broadway-style orchestra pits, giving me a wide range of abilities that are valuable to any musician. Read More

My teaching style is focused on helping each student feel at ease, so that they can better learn. I also am strength-based in.my approach. That is, I focus on each individuals strengths in learning. This is in contrast to other teaching styles which are geared toward focusing on an individuals challenges. I have observed that this is the best way to successfully address new musical techniques and concepts. An example might be a child who likes to sing, but is struggling to learn new notes. Read More

For the stage of 0-3, I will select some basic courses in Yamaha. In this way, students can learn to play simple sentences first. Among them, I will teach some music theory knowledge as an assistant. When teaching my students, my lessons are relaxed and informal, with a focus on building basic knowledge that will be applicable throughout the musical journey- however, I also pride myself in helping my students enjoy music as well, and have the capabilities to record their playing. This not only builds confidence but is an invaluable source of feedback that I find is often overlooked. As early as possible, I try to have my students play along to either a cover song or play along with me, in order to develop skills on the instrument that are practical, meaningful, and fun. I've found the most successful drummers can read well and play all styles. For beginning students, I generally introduce 'Syncopation' by Ted Reed along with 'Stick Control,' the PASIC 40 Rudiments, 'Alfred's Drum Method' for drum set, and technical exercises. For more advanced students, I like to use books like Rick Latham's 'Advanced Funk Studies,' David Garibaldi's 'Future Sounds,' 'Portaits in Rhythm' by Anthony Cirone, and 'The Art of Bop Drumming' by John Riley. My teaching experience dates back to when I was in high school, when I began teaching beginning students of all instruments 10 years ago. I have been consistently teaching students in their homes, my home, and online for the past 5 years. Ive found that introducing students to as many different styles of music as possible goes a long way in helping students enjoy playing their instrument and listening to recordings of their instrument.
