I take the student at his/her own pace. I try to be sensitive to the needs of the student not just his/her musical needs but his/her academic needs as my ability to continue working with the student depends upon his/her academic success. I will suggest a basic routine at home: Housework, Practice, Study, Leisure, Bedtime. Every student is different, so my teaching approach is rarely identical from student to student. Technical training progresses as a student develops motivation through his or her practice habits. I try to encourage practice through journal entry and self-accountability. I also try to make a student's home practice a little more exciting by setting goals and explaining what will be accomplished through achieving these short-term goals. I would begin with whatever book your child's school has provided. This would provide consistency and avoid confusion. Aside from this there are fundamentals such as scales and rhythm exercises that are universally efficacious and essential. I would also work specifically on whatever piece the student is currently working on. I would find it best to find out at what level the student is at before tailoring a more specific program.
