Since I am also a composer and arranger, I tend to be partial towards the use of my own "homemade" methods.... taking on the idea of composers like Mozart, Beethoven and Schumann (example would be Album of the Young) and writing simple pieces that reinforce specific technical challenges like double thirds, left hand arpeggios, consecutive octaves, pedalling and so on. Once the student learns proper form in holding the instrument, identifying the strings, tuning the instrument and following basic verbal instruction on producing accurate sounds, then basic theory will be applied for older students in the course of learning chords, and younger students will focus on more on learning simple chords. I use some custom lesson plans, including some of the following: For piano, I explain the music score to start elementary reading, work on hand and finger positioning, and move to simple scaler melodies. I introduce chord theory and understanding including triads, position changes, an later on sevenths and ninths. Exercises include scales for 1 and the 2 hands, Hanon exercises, and more. My teaching style depends on my student. If I have kids taking lessons, I keep the lessons fun and exciting, and make sure to include musical games to play that will allow the student to develop good aural and vocal skills. When it comes to adult students, I try to figure out their most efficient way of learning (kinesthetic, analytical, etc.) and cater to that. It's important to know that each student progresses at their own pace, but as long as they are practicing and having fun, the rest will fall into place. Read More
