At the start of the lesson, I will emphasize tone and air control which I've found makes a huge difference as a warm up. The primary books I will work out of are Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. As students progress and I feel that they have a handle on the basics, I will slowly start to incorporate other repertoire that will be exciting to play and perform. Chelso's method of teaching is now my method. Since I was intermediate when he taught me, he gave a performance on the song he wanted me to play and make my own through alternate chord changes. I would do the same with intermediate and advanced students. My early teachers started me on easy songs with finger exercises, especially how to play contrapuntally on the bass side. For beginning flute students, I use the Trevor Wye flute instruction books, along with the curriculum that is being taught in the student's band class at school.
