The first lesson I will assess the students playing to get to know them and their goals so we can get started right away. For beginners we'll be focusing heavily on Syncopation and Stick Control, two excellent books. When the student has a grasp on the basics we will work on dynamic control, limb independence, sense of time and ear training. I look to strengthen fundamentals immediately: breathing, embouchure, tonguing, etc. Throughout our lessons, the warm up assignments I give continuously seek to strengthen these skills. In the beginning, I also assign short beginner etudes and rhythm exercises. Once the student has a good grasp on fundamentals, I begin to introduce solo repertoire and encourage students to sign up for recitals and solo-ensemble competitions. My teaching style is this; if you have fun learning, you are going to have fun playing. Every player is at a different stage of learning, and that's what makes my job so amazing. I get to see where my students are at, and I work with each individual student knowing that I can make where they are at with guitar a fun learning experience.
