When these skills are mastered I will get the students comfortable with their instruments and begin playing. Students that have a background in music with their instruments will be assessed to determine the level of teaching required. A student must be comfortable enough to take the risks that are necessary to grow as a musician. Sometimes those risks will result in what seems to be a failure. I try to reinforce the idea that it is not a failure because you tried, what can we use from that experience to get closer to what you were trying to accomplish next time. My teaching experience started 5 years ago. I was a senior in high school and was teaching a beginning student the trombone. Throughout the past 5 years I have continued to teach students when I was able to. I encourage regular practice and maintaining a consistent schedule. I always say 10 minutes a day is better then 30 minutes every 3 days. For younger students a combination or aural learning and written learning are great ways to help them engage and keep an interest. Read More
