I give a very good foundational approach to the learning experience. For example, I teach students how to find the notes on the guitar and the bass. From there on the guitar, I teach the open string chords. On the bass, I give fingering exercises and patterns to work on. With the chords, we look at simple songs to play. The most important part of singing is making sure no harm is ever being done - so healthy technique is the key, then, we start to focus on depth of sound, etc. I try to help my students find a way to make singing as natural and simple as possible, without overthinking and becoming obsessive about rhythms or pitches. Of course everything should be accurate, but the more the vowels are forward (like in speech), the jaw and tongue can move freely and independently (just like when we yell), and the breath is constant, then everything will be in tune. Having fun is a necessary condition for learning, so I try to cultivate a fun, laid-back, no-pressure atmosphere in my lessons. Every student has their own particular set of strengths and weaknesses, goals and time contraints. I take the time to understand what each student is looking to get out of their lessons and custom-tailor a unique lesson plan for each student accordingly. I have over 12 years teaching experience both piano and voice to students of all levels and ages. When I work with a student, my first goal is to establish a positive, open dialogue where students feel comfortable asking questions, trying new techniques or styles, and stepping outside of their comfort zone. From there, I prioritize developing a healthy technique in both singing and playing piano, emphasize musical literacy where we regularly work on reading notes on a modern staff notation (with all the accompanying vocabulary), and explore a wide range of repertoire that speaks to the student.
