I use the Faber & Faber or Alfred teaching methods with students who are beginners. These methods teach note reading skills, music theory, aural and ear training skills, sight reading, and transposition. If you are a transfer student and have worked with a previous instructor, I'm happy to use the method books you're familiar with. For intermediate and advanced players, the focus is on technique and piano repertoire. On the basis of one's skill and prior experience, I will devise a plan starting with ideas of fundamental musical ideas (scales, arpeggios, key signatures, reading music) all the way to more advanced concepts of harmony and placement. Having the opportunity to hear a student's wishes will help me align myself with their goals and intentions musically which will inform my concepts. While there is an expectation that the student gives assistance in their difficulties to decide what is best for them, there also will be a thorough diagnosis of skills and weaknesses, for a better learning experience. When I teach children, I use the adventures piano lesson book. When I see that the student are advancing, I encourage them to further their knowledge. I make sure my students learn the scales; which are very important. I also use the Hanon book for exercises when my students begin to advance to a higher level of understanding.
