I am incredibly fortunate to have access to the resources at NYU and to love teaching music more and more every day: I have had practical experience in woodwind, brass, string, voice, and percussion pedagogy, as well as music in early childhood and for students of all abilities. My teachers include Jason Noble (instrumental conducting), Paul Speiser (choral conducting), Kim McCord (childhood/special ed music pedagogy), Ethan Hein (electronic music pedagogy), and Christopher Bush (clarinet performance). I have been lucky enough to have been teaching for 45 years I have taught privately for a short period of time I also taught at Plainview high school as a drill instructor working with the students in the marching band and helping some of them prepare for nysma solos I really had a great time doing that for about a year and a half I taught at Sam Ash for group lessons for promotion the main thing that I like to do is get students to be proficient enough to be able to play two songs to be able to play in a band also too to be able to prepare for playing the band in whatever school they happen to be in college preparation audition preparation auditioning for America's got talent anything the student wants to do but the main thing that I really like to emphasize is having them be able to play to songs I like to teach all styles of music really working around with a student wants to do it's been really rewarding for me and it's always a great experience many of my students have gone on to play professionally and have achieved great technical skills it's great to see that happening. I strongly value theory and technical groundwork, but I also believe in guiding students toward the genres and compositions where they will find their own passion for music. With a solid foundation and an inner drive to keep playing, even beginner musicians can reach goals that may have previously seemed insurmountable. For beginners, we will start with the fundamentals and focus on pieces that they can master and enjoy as we work towards more complex repertoire and playing styles. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time at various studios and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the past 6 years. I like to emphasize a consistent schedule of practice, so that this helps the student progress in their studies. I have also found that by combining styles of classical and modern music can help the student gain a better understanding of their instrument. Read More

For my beginning students, I have them start with KJOS Standards Of Excellence. Once they have began to learn the techniques to properly play, I will begin them with repitoire that I find suitable for them to play and also what they would like to learn so this way the students are learning what they want, which makes the music learning process even more enjoyable! By making a individual lesson plan it allows my students to be able to advance at their own pace and also have the students learn their instruments even better. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with simple chords and teach them a few fun songs. If the student is interested in learning how to read music, I will use Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance if they are interested in performing live. For adults, I like to find out what they are most interested in, whether it is a specific genre, (jazz/classical) or if they are more interested in learning songs (classic rock/pop/etc.) or songwriting. I use a few different method books, and while they are very useful for attaining the building blocks of technique and knowledge young and beginning musicians need but I like to go beyond what reading books has to offer. My goal is to show my students everything there is - reading, theory, and technique are all important but so is creation, improvisation, learning through sound and finding what inspires them.
