I listen to what the student has to say, and also hone in on where they are currently in their musicianship. This allows me to really see what areas need to be focused on specifically. I strongly encourage students to push themselves and will often provide slightly more challenging material to help them improve. If, however, a student does not practice, I try to work with them in a positive manner to see if we can get to the root of the issue. I do not take a 'lecture style' approach as I find a lack of practice often has more to do with their fear than anything else. I have been teaching students since my sophomore year of high school, 3 years ago. I taught both beginner piano lessons and flute lessons of all levels. I encourage my students to keep a practice journal with their practice schedule, daily practice logs, long term and short term goals, lessons from notes, and anything else that can be useful for improvement. As a voice teacher, it is very rewarding to watch people grow as musicians and as artists. I love creating music, and that transfers over to helping others harness the power and artistry that we each possess within ourselves. However, talent isn't everything! Without the discipline it takes to practice and be patient with yourself, progress won't be made as quickly.
