I then went to Otterbein College and earned my degree in Voice. From there I started working for Music and Arts in Westerville as a piano instructor for 10 years. I have a passion for music. I started on the piano when I was seven years old and I've never looked back. After spending years in grade school, junior high and high school learning and performing in the band program on trumpet and euphonium, I moved on to play euphonium in The Most Exciting Band in the Land, the Ohio University Marching 110! Students want to learn the piano for a variety of reasons. Some arent really sure they want to learn at all, but mom wants them to give it a shot! Others just want to learn that song on the radio! All are fine reasons to learn, and each deserves a personal approach. For very young students just learning the basics, structure provides direction and comfort, so Id recommend jumping into a beginners curriculum such as by Alfred or Hal Leonard and going from there. We are all different. Each student has their own pace of learning. So, I encourage this with setting up realistic goals for each student. Every lesson, I write memos about assignemnts, and student's progress compare to previous lesson/week. Therefore, students and parents will receive "Progress Results" in every four lessons. For begining guitar, bass, and key board students I generally work with several method books, and supply supplimentary materials as required. I believe that each student is unique, and what works for one student might not be sutiable for another. My teaching style feels relaxed but I work hard to keep students in their least restrictive environment. We dont want the student to be too challenged or bored. For this reason I am flexible with the content we work on and the order in which we complete different parts of the lesson. I give a lot of choice to students, maybe one day they want to start with working on some improvisation and want to work on their assigned pieces the 2nd half of the lesson. Read More
