I began singing solos in church when I was 6 years old. I picked up the guitar when I was 10. At Montevallo, my primary instrument was voice and piano was my secondary instrument. I've been teaching professionally since 1981 -- 37 years as of this writing. My students have gone on to be professionals themseleves, but many of them just enriched their lives with music. As a performer, I've sung and played guitar in churches, clubs, local television and at weddings, funerals and I've perfomed in musicals alongside Broadway star Rebecca Luker in college. Read More

I love teaching Voice and have a particular affinity for meeting the needs of the student. Every voice is unique, and should be treated as such with careful consideration. I instill pedagogical principles for healthy singing in all my students. I help students establish their goals/interests, and we achieve them through fun and engaging warm ups and appropriate repertoire. I received a Masters Degree in Vocal Performance and taught at the Collegiate Level at The University of Alabama. Read More

I was raised in a musical home in New York City suburbia. Therefore, I was constantly surrounded by the sound of music. My parents were classical violinists and my older brother and I quickly developed a love for making music. I want my students to love it as much as I did when I started studying it. When I was five, I began classical piano studies with Elena Belli at Manhattan School of Music. Read More

I teach them to play scales with a metronome and they are usually playing 16 th notes and counting it out while they play it in the first month.I want to get them off and running. I teach them to read chord charts in the first month and have students reading notation in F and G clef in 5-6 hours worth of lesson time. My theory teacher Mr Lormand, had a master from Julliard and was a stickler for the vernacular and so am I, my grandmother was a school teacher and I get a lot from her as well.I get my students to buy a Harvard Dictionary of music for reference. Nothing is more important to me than my students' personal goals and having a discussion on how we can achieve those goals. I always want to make sure my students are moving forward in their creative process, so I like to check in with them at each lesson to discuss their progress. It's definitely important to me that my students practice on their own (especially if we're having lessons once/week.) I like to have my students record themselves (using the voice memo feature on their phone or, if possible, another recording device) so they can listen back to their lessons and practice between lessons. Not only will I teach you how to play piano . . . I will teach you how to read and play printed music. Learning to "play by ear" only teaches you how to play a few songs . . . learning to read music opens the door to a vast library of printed piano music! In addition to your method book, we will work on technique (finger exercises for strength and flexibility), theory (what makes music work), and repertoire (performance pieces). Read More

Schaum piano methods for the exercises(FINGERPOWER), theory(NOTESPELLER), and REPERTOIRE(Books named after specific colors). I like these books because they progress from simple to truly advanced. For teenagers and adults, I use the All-In-One Alfred piano method.Starts appropriately for level and age. 1 book covers the theory and repertoire we will need. I believe that young children should have lessons no more than 30 minutes. For some older, intermediate, and advanced; the lessons can go to 30-45 minutes. Read More
