Based on a child's interest and personal voice, I recommend pieces of music varying from musical theatre, 28 Italian Songs, Schirmer's Book of Solos, and Hal Leonard's Standard Literature. In our lessons, I teach students to warm up with the proper technique, and so that they may warm themselves up when practicing. I'm well trained in the Suzuki repertoire and philosophies, however I teach a combination of traditional methods and also have the ability to exclude one or the other. For beginners and young children, I teach note reading simultaneously but separately from the applied side of playing. Holding the violin and bow, for example, are very challenging and require time to focus on them individually. Note reading is done on the side and later these aspects merge so that kids are eventually learning new pieces by reading the music directly. Read More

I set realistic goals for my students at each lesson. I like to demonstrate how to play- usually I count while the student plays, which helps with the beats. We may sing together or separate the note names or the song words. Every music phase requires different input. Students who struggle with note reading, get additional note reading and writing books. For beginning students who are children, I either utilize the "Robyn Method" (Keyboard Town); or the "Clark Method" (The Music Tree). Both methods provide emphasis on intervalic reading of notes, in addition to learning the specific names of all notes in both clefs. For adult beginners, I typically use "Play by Choice" or the Robyn Method. These methods help prepare the intermediate students for learning and playing the scales, including the Hannon exercises and playing the arpeggios. Read More
