I see what ability level the student is at and then decide which method books would be most helpful.I will supplement with my own material when appropriate.For beginning students who are younger,I like Hal Leonard's Essential Elements and Alfred,among others.For adults I try and find out what the student is interested in accomplishing and tailor the lessons accordingly.I like to give each student a good backing of music theory and an exposure to a wide variety of styles.I want to have each student be open to all types of music. I also introduce songs they are familiar with alongside seasonal or festival music to make the lessons more engaging and boost their interest in learning. For intermediate students, I add materials such as exercises from Hanon or Czerny to develop stronger technique. I pair these with music by various composers so that, while building the foundation of piano playing, my students explore different styles of music. Read More
