When I think of teaching, I think of how rewarding it is to get to know each student and their families. I encourage parents to stay in the lesson (not required). There is so much to learn and see. My students each have a plan each week outlining not just WHAT to practice but HOW to practice. I often say if you practice HOW I am asking you to practice, you will learn a lot and progress. -Practicing is important, but the most essential way to improve is to USING THE CORRECT METHOD TO PRACTICE. -A wrong way to practice the piano might lead a dead end no matter how long you spend on the piano, but a good method will cost you less than half the energy to yield the best result in piano playing. -I use the simplest and correct methods to help you play the piano, which was discovered and summarized by my piano knowledge and experience combined with my professors' guideline which was from the Juilliard School, New England Conservatory and the Jacobs School of Music. I certainly have adopted the teaching styles of my previous and current instructors, each bringing a unique approach to teaching an instrument. Patience and understand is crucial with any students, and there needs to be a lot of fun and excitement within a lesson, otherwise, what is the point? Now, fun and excitement must also be met with serious practice time and great concentration during a lesson. My objective is to create a comfortable environment fertile for learning, while at the same time having my students know there are skills to refine and concepts to solidify. Read More

Similar to what is written above I prefer an approach that is rooted in the fundamentals. It is my belief that learning these well can serve a student later on when the music starts to become more difficult. Most students I have that have learned in this way tend to not get overwhelmed and are able to transition to higher levels of playing more easily. One of my favorite quotes is "The advanced level is mastery of the basics" which I have found to be true. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching college-entrance level music theory classes and private piano lessons. For the past of ten years, I have been teaching classical piano, music theory, ear training, jazz piano, jazz history/theory, and k-12 level school bands including young winds, symphonic band and jazz band. I teach students with different music levels and ages. And I speak Mandarin and English, and I have been teaching bilingually for almost my entire teaching career. Read More

My goal is for my students to love music and enjoy the process of learning and growing and reaching their personal goals as a musician. Whether that's just playing for fun or preparing them for a recital or coffee shop gig or professional studio recording experience or preparing their part for the musical group that they participate in; I have helped my students with all these things. I strive to have a positive teaching style by focusing on their strengths and helping them achieve their personal goals. Read More

For beginners, I generally stick with the Faber Method books, as I enjoy their unity of music theory and practical application more than other method series. It is my goal to remove students from methods as soon as possible- somewhere around early intermediate skill level, so that we may engage with more meaningful repertoire from the 'greats', as well as give the students the tools to take agency over their own repertoire choices, including transcriptions of popular media.
